Abstract

Reading is essential in all aspects, especially in education. In this research, most students struggle with reading English texts, one reason being that students lack grammar mastery and low reading skills. This is the background of the researcher conducting a study to increase the reading skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 Punggur Central Lampung using the Marking Text strategy.

The method of this research was Classroom Action Research (CAR), which was done in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this researcher were 32 students of the eight graders of SMPN 1 Punggur. The research was conducted collaboratively with the English teacher of SMPN 1 Punggur.

Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that there is an increase in students’ reading skills. Starting from the pre-test results with a percentage of 22%, then in post-test 1 it increased to 47%, and in post-test 2 it increased again to 84%. In addition, the result of the students learning activities in cycle 1 is 38% and in cycle 2 is 73%. It means that using the marking text strategy can increase the students’ reading skills, especially in descriptive text, at the eighth graders of SMPN 1 Punggur Central Lampung.
