Abstract

The main objective of this research is to improve the students’ reading comprehension at the eighth grade of Junior High School 1 Punggur in Central Lampung and to evaluate the effectiveness of the Wattpad Application in improving students' reading comprehension. This study focuses on students’ reading comprehension. The problems identified in this study are that most of students face difficulties in reading comprehension, lack motivation to read, have low skills in understanding the meaning of texts, and are uninterested or bored with reading.

In this study, the researcher used Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observing and reflecting. The subjects of this study were 35 students from class VIII 2 of Junior High School 1 Punggur. To collect data, the researcher used tests (Pre-test, Post-test 1, and Post-test 2), observation and documentation. This research was conducted in collaboration with an English teacher at Junior High School 1 Punggur in Central Lampung.

The results of this study indicate that students’ scores have improved significantly from Pre-test to Post-test. The average score in the Pre-test was 53.14, Post-test I with an average of 68.86 and at Post-test II reached an average of 72.29. Therefore, it can be concluded that Wattpad Application can effectively improve students' reading comprehension.
