Abstract

The increasing divorce rate among the elderly, especially among the Muslim community in East Lampung Regency in recent years, has currently had an impact on the increasing divorce rate in Indonesia. This study aims to understand the extent of the potential for elderly divorce, and what are the backgrounds to divorce in the elderly, and what are the implications received by the parties after the divorce. In its completion, this study uses a qualitative descriptive method with the theory of family sociology analysis through a structural functional approach and family conflict. The results of this study indicate that elderly divorce is dominated by divorce cases. In addition, the most common cause of divorce found is because of a third party or infidelity with the cause being that the majority of elderly women experience menopause resulting in decreased libido or decreased sexual ability, so that elderly couples tend not to be able to fulfill their sexual needs and trigger infidelity. In addition, other factors are continuous arguments, lack of responsibility, family factors, economic factors, domestic violence, lack of communication, and not the first marriage. The implications felt after divorce by the parties include loss of trust from the social environment, disturbed psychological impacts, trauma, declining health, and difficulty in establishing new relationships. This research is important to be studied as a form of anticipation to readers that divorce can happen at any time, under any conditions, and it is hoped that it can be a consideration for authorized government institutions to realize counseling and mentoring activities for elderly married couples, as an effort to reduce the divorce rate in Indonesia.
