Abstract
National examination is a commonly written and practiced evaluation in Indonesia. One of the lessons examined is English. English National Examination with the big proportion of reading questions demands students to understand most of vocabularies which are used to answer the questions. Based on that phenomenon, the English teacher should give the best preparation for the students in facing the national examination. Having the list of words commonly appears in reading passages namely High Frequency Words (HFW) is regarded to be one technique to comprehend the passages. Excitedly, the researcher placed HFW along with the reason why high frequency words happen and the lexical density of the reading passages become the primary goals of this research.
Qualitative research was the type of this research which takes case study as the approach of the data. The researcher took 37 reading passages from all 5 packets. The researcher collected the data by using documentation, observation and interview. Meanwhile, Miles and Huberman's model was used to analyze the data. Regarding to the process of researching, the researcher, firstly, collected all reading passages in all packets and grouped the same passages into 37 passages. Then, the researcher observed them to find out the HFW on those passages along with the lexical density of each passage. In addition, the reasons of HFW's appearance were told in narrative. At last, the researcher displayed all the result of her findings.
The result of the analysis illustrates that there are 200 high frequency words found on those 37 reading passages. It can be classified by the word classes namely 23%, determiner 19%, verb 15%, pronoun 14%, noun 14%, conjunction 8%, adverb 5%, and adjective 2% of all HFW appearances in the passages. They appeared because of the crucial reason of grammatical words to the English structure regardless of the topic and the different types of the reading passages. From the 37 reading passages there are 57% passages in medium between 50 and 59, meaning that the most reading passages examined are easy enough to be comprehended by the students. While passages with high lexical density are 8% difficult to be comprehended, the passages with low lexical density are 35% easy to be comprehended where it can be proven by the high scores reached by the mor than 50% students.
