Abstract

This study investigates the lexical errors in English writing written by the students At Islamic Vocational High School Of Roudhotul Falah Sukadana. The objectives of this study are to answer the research questions, those are, what kinds of lexical errors found in the students' sentences. Thus, this research is conducted to find out the types of lexical errors made by the students

The research is designed by using qualitative descriptive method in which the data are presented in the form of texts or words taken from the Students At Islamic Vocational High School Of Roudhotul Falah Sukadana . The data were analyzed using an approach of formal errors of lexis category by identifying lexical errors made by the students, then classifying the lexical errors found, and describing it as well concluding the results ofdata analysis.

Data analysis reveals some findings covering the proposed research questions. The researcher finds that the lexical errors are committed in three categories; they are formal misselection, misformation, and distortion. Then, there are 18,52 % formal misselection, 7,67 % misformation, and 73,81 % distortion. In formal misselection category, the researcher finds that there are three types, they are, errors in suffix 27 items, vowel-based type 25 items, consonant-based type 18 items. However, errors of prefix disappeared in the students' writing. In misformation category, there are three types, they are, coinage disappeared in the students' writing, borrowing disappeared in the students' writing, and calque 29 items. The third is distortion category, in which mostly committed by the students in their writing, occurs in four types, they are, omission 32 items, overinclusion 14 items, misselection 169 items, and misordering 64 items.

Therefore, the result of the research showed that most of the students of lexical error and errors were found in Descripive paragraph, the highest percentage of lexical errors in descriptive texts was misformation, and the students didn't understand how to write well.
