Abstract
The purpose of English instructional is to improve the four skills namely: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Writing is used to convey the ideas in written form to communicate with others. In fact, many students still found difficulties in writing English text because the students find it difficult to start their writing. One way to improve writing skill is by using freewriting technique. Freewriting technique is used in the beginning of writing to help the students to find and generate ideas freely. Freewriting technique is an educational tool that can be used to achieve learning goal. So, freewriting technique can improve students' writing performance.
This research was a quantitative research, especially in quasi experimental design form. The objective of this research was intended to find out the influence of using freewriting technique on the writing performance in narrative texts. This research was conducted in SMPN 2 Batanghari. The population was the VIII grade that consists of 5 classes. A class was taken as sample of the research that was class VIII.4 that consist of 30 students. To investigate whether there was a positive and significant influence by using freeewriting technique and narrative writing performance at the VIII.4, the writer analyzed the data by using "t-test". In this research, the researcher used pre-test and post-test in one class because it had same the characteristics. The pre-test average score was 54.633. Meanwhile, the post-test average score was 72.633. The result of data analysis was fobserved 9.982 and table 2.045, 2.756, and 3.659. The result of data analysis Chi-Square was x² observed = 26.10 dan x table7.815, 11.341.
Based on the data result confirmed that tobserved is higher than table and x2 observed is higher than x²uble. Therefore, it can be inferred that Ha was accepted. It means that there were any positive and significant influence of using freewriting technique toward writing performance at the eighth graders of SMPN 2 Batanghari in academic year 2012/2013.
