Abstract

The purpose of this research was to determine whether using Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) could improve students' reading skills. The focus of the study was on the reading skills of English students at SMP Al Shiddiqi Way Jepara. This research was based on the identification of problems, namely that students had difficulty memorizing vocabulary and understanding word meanings. Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) was applied as an alternative instructional approach to actively engage students and enhance their reading comprehension.

This study was conducted as a Concept Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) project and consisted of two cycles. Each cycle included four stages: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Students were given a pre-test before the treatment and post-tests after each cycle. The subjects of this research were 31 students from Class VIII-1 at SMP Al Shiddiqi Way Jepara. Data collection methods included tests (pre-test, post-test cycle I, and post-test cycle II), observations, field notes, and documentation.

The results of the research indicate an improvement in the students' reading skills. This was demonstrated by the increase in average test scores: from 62.25 in the pre-test, to 71.45 in post-test I, and 77.74 in post-test II. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that using Concept-Oriented Reading Instruction (CORI) is an effective method for improving students' reading skills. The success of this research is supported by the achievement of the predetermined success criteria.
