Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the use of the Grammarly application in academic writing among students at the State Islamic University of Jurai Siwo Lampung. The objectives of this research were to identify the phenomenon of academic writing among students, to explore their reasons for using Grammarly, and to evaluate the effectiveness of Grammarly in improving the quality of academic writing. This research employed a qualitative method. The participants of this study consisted of ten fifth-semester students, Class A and B (8 students from Class A and 2 students from Class B). The Data were collected through semi- structured interviews and documentation of students’ writing, and then analyzed using the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman.

The findings revealed that the most dominant phenomenon in students’ academic writing was the use of strategies and adaptations in writing (37%), showing that students actively overcome linguistic and cognitive difficulties by outlining, reading academic references, and utilizing digital tools such as Grammarly. Regarding the reasons for using Grammarly, the most prevalent motivation was its efficiency and speed in revising academic texts (38%), indicating that students primarily use Grammarly to save time and simplify the editing process. Moreover, Grammarly proved highly effective in reducing grammatical, vocabulary, and punctuation errors (40%), which significantly improved students’ accuracy, clarity, and fluency in writing. Overall, Grammarly serves not only as an error correction tool but also as an AI-based learning medium that enhances students’ autonomy, writing quality, and confidence in academic writing of English students at the State Islamic University of Jurai Siwo Lampung.
