Abstract

This study aims to analyze students’ perceptions of the use of multiple- choice questions in English assessment. The research was conducted on Tenth- grade students of MA Al-Ishlah in the academic year 2025/2026. This study used a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documentation.

The results of this study show that students have both positive and negative perceptions toward multiple-choice questions. The positive perceptions indicate that multiple-choice questions are considered easier, more practical, and less stressful compared to essay and oral tests. Students feel more confident when answering multiple-choice questions because the answer options help them in choosing the correct answer. However, the negative perceptions reveal that multiple-choice questions do not fully measure students’ English abilities, especially speaking and writing skills. Some students also tend to guess the answers when they find difficult vocabulary or long reading texts.

In conclusion, multiple-choice questions are perceived as an effective and efficient assessment tool, but they have limitations in assessing students’ overall English proficiency. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers combine multiple- choice questions with other assessment forms to obtain a more comprehensive evaluation of students’ English skills.
