Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is a positive and significant influence of using English magazines as teaching media on the reading comprehension of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Metro. Many students experience difficulties in comprehending reading texts, which can negatively affect their academic performance. Therefore, English magazines were used as instructional media to investigate their effect on students’ reading comprehension.
This study employed quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design involving two classes: an experimental class taught using English magazines and a control class taught using conventional teaching methods. The samples were selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected through reading comprehension tests administered as pre-tests and post-tests, and the data were analyzed using SPSS 25.
The results showed that the significance value (2-tailed) was 0.000, which is lower than the significance level of 0.05. This indicates a statistically significant difference in reading comprehension achievement between the experimental and control classes. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of English magazines as teaching media has a positive and significant influence on the reading comprehension of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Metro.
