Abstract

Translation is the essential skill in learning English. It is the activities of transferring the message from the source language into target language by the equivalent meaning. Translation is not an easy task because it deals with two or more different languages that have different language system and background of culture.

In university, translation becomes compulsory subject for the English Department students; however, there are many students feel hard to make a good translation result because of some factors. One of the factors is that they don't know the appropriate method. In translation, there are many methods that can be used; one of them is communicative translation method. This method attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both content and language are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership. Generally, the purpose of translation is to create translation result that communicatively and easily understand by the readers. So that, in this case, the writer wants to know the communicative translation result of the students by analyzing students' translation using communicative translation method.

This research was conducted at the fourth-grade-students of English Education Study Programme of State Islamic College (STAIN) of Jurai Siwo Metro, Academic Year 2011/2012. The sample that consists of ten students as the respondent. This is a qualitative descriptive research design and type a case study. The writer used test documentation and interview as the data collection method and used Miles and Huberman model in analyzing the data.

This study aimed at describing the communicative translation result especially in readability aspect from English into Indonesia translation. The collected data were analyzed on the basis of readability aspect and three procedures in translation: (1) addition, (2) omission, and (3) transposition.

The result of the study showed the followings: Firstly, the frequency of students' communicative translations on readable was 14%, almost readable 59%, and unreadable 27%. Secondly, the frequency of error using translation procedures were 70% students' error in using addition, 60% students' error in using omission, and 40% student's error in using transposition.

The conclusion of the study showed that the communicative translation of the fourth grade students of English Study Program of State Islamic College of Jurai Siwo Metro in English into Indonesia translation especially in readability aspect is still low. Mostly and relatively they translated the text literally, using unacceptable term in target language, translated out of the context from the source into target language, did not know the right translation procedures and they still unfamiliar with the concept of communicative translation method. The students also made error in using translation procedures mostly in addition, omission and transposition.
