Abstract

The goal of teaching listening is the students can understand what the other said. The Students find some difficulties in mastering the listening. So, they become more passive in listening subject. Therefore, it is better to look for good method in teaching listening, and we can stimulate the students to improve their listening skill by some activities. English movies as one of media in teaching listening help the students to increase the students' sensibility in hearing, sense and participation.

This research is aimed to find out whether there is a positive and significant influence of watching English movies toward students' listening skill. This research is quantitative in experiment form. The research used test, documentation and observation to collect the data.

Furthermore, this research was conducted in SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Marga Tiga. The subjects of this research were 55 students as a sample. There were 29 students as experiment class that got the treatment and 26 students as control class that did not get that treatment. The researcher used cluster random sampling as a sampling technique. To pursue the goal, the researcher used t-test formula, in this case the researcher used SPSS (statistical package for social science) version 16 to prove whether hypothesis is accepted or rejected.

The research result showed that the average score of experiment class (70.00) is higher than control class (56.92). Therefore, it can be inferred that there is a significant influence of watching English movies toward students' listening skill. The differences also can be seen from the significant level of 5%, it was attained that t-observed 3.481 is higher than t-table 2.010. It means that there is a positive and significant influence of watching English movies toward the students listening skill at tenth grade students of SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Marga Tiga in academic year 2012/2013.
