Abstract

There are three different types of code mixing stated by Hoffman; Intra-Sentential Code Mixing, Intra-Lexical Code Mixing, and Involving Chance of Pronunciation. The occurrence can be caused by some factors. The objectives of this research are to find out the type of code mixing used by the students in English Community (HMJ) of State Institute for Islamic Studies Metro, as well as the reason and cause of the difficulty in using code mixing.

In this case, the researcher used qualitative method, and collected data by doing observation, interview, recording, and documentation. In the observation, the researcher conducted a free discussion with the students and recorded their voices. The researcher also recorded the interview with the students by using semi-structured procedure.

The result of the research showed that the students in English Community (HMJ) State Institute for Islamic Studies Metro often use code mixing in their daily conversation. The factors which mostly caused in using code mixing was habitual communication. The overall data of code mixing were 32 data. The researcher found that the most type of code mixing used by the students was Intra-sentential code mixing, which is 84,3%, only 15,63% for Intra-Lexical code mixing, and the change of pronunciation is 0%. Some of the students stated that diction can be the problem in code mixing. The problem is because they have lack of vocabulary mastery.
