Abstract
This study aims to identify and analyze the idiomatic expressions used in the film Forrest Gump. Using a qualitative research method, the researcher collected data by reviewing the movie’s script and closely observing the dialogues spoken by the characters. The idiomatic expressions found were classified into six categories based on O’Dell and McCarthy’s theory: similes, binomials, proverbs, euphemisms, clichés, and fixed statements. A total of seventeen idiomatic expressions were identified, with similes and euphemisms appearing most frequently in the film.
The meanings of these idiomatic expressions were interpreted to understand their denotative and connotative significance within the context of the film’s narrative. The idioms contribute to character development, cultural representation, and emotional expression, enhancing the audience’s connection with the story. Furthermore, the study analyzed how these idiomatic expressions construct meaning and influence the film’s dialogue dynamics.
In addition, the research examined the translation strategies used for these idiomatic expressions in the Indonesian subtitles. Following Baker’s theory, paraphrasing emerged as the most widely used strategy, followed by using idioms with similar meaning and form, using idioms with similar meaning but different form, and omission. This study offers valuable insights for English language learners, translators, and researchers interested in the linguistic features of film dialogue and idiom usage.
