Abstract

This research aimed to analyze students’ English learning difficulties in the Islamic boarding school environment at SMK Riyadlatul-Ulum Batanghari. The study used a qualitative research design involving eleventh-grade students and one English teacher as participants. The data were collected through classroom observation and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that the students experienced significant difficulties in learning English, especially in listening and speaking skills. The students had problems understanding spoken English, expressing ideas orally, and responding to English instructions. These difficulties were influenced by limited vocabulary mastery, grammar problems, pronunciation difficulties, low self-confidence, fear of making mistakes, and limited exposure to English in daily communication within the boarding school environment.

Furthermore, the study found that both internal and external factors contributed to students’ English learning difficulties. Internal factors included anxiety, low motivation, and lack of confidence, while external factors were related to the limited use of English in the boarding school environment, monotonous learning activities, and lack of communicative practice. To overcome these difficulties, students attempted several strategies such as memorizing vocabulary, using dictionaries, and practicing independently, while the teacher provided repeated explanations and guidance during classroom activities. The study concludes that improving students’ English ability requires not only effective teaching strategies but also a supportive learning environment that encourages active English communication both inside and outside the classroom.
