Abstract

This study aims to explore how ChatGPT helps English Department students at UIN Jurai Siwo Lampung generate ideas for writing papers and to investigate students’ experiences in using ChatGPT in academic writing contexts. This study employed a qualitative research design. The participants consisted of four English Department students who had experience using ChatGPT for academic writing purposes. The data were collected through interviews and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, including data collection, data display, and drawing conclusions.

The findings revealed that students frequently used ChatGPT during the pre- writing stage to generate outlines, topic explanations, and examples related to their papers. Students also used prompts strategically by modifying instructions to obtain more relevant responses according to their academic needs. Furthermore, the study found that students did not directly copy ChatGPT’s responses but tended to use techniques such as paraphrase, revise, omit, and expand the generated information. ChatGPT was perceived as a supportive tool that helped students organize ideas, overcome writer’s block, save time, and increase confidence in writing. However, students also recognized several limitations, such as responses that were sometimes too general or insufficiently detailed. Therefore, students still needed to critically evaluate and develop the generated information independently.

In conclusion, ChatGPT plays a significant role in supporting students in generating ideas for writing papers when used critically, responsibly, and ethically.
