Abstract

Learning evaluation is a vital component in determining curriculum success; however, at SMPIT Bina Insani Metro, the ninth-grade English summative test items have never been empirically analyzed, leaving the quality of the assessment instrument questionable. This research aims to evaluate the quality of these test items based on validity, reliability, difficulty level, discrimination power, and distractor effectiveness. Using a descriptive quantitative method on 40 items administered to 71 students, the study identified the empirical profile of the instrument. The findings demonstrate that the test possesses high internal consistency (reliability r11=0.804) and strong content validity. Nevertheless, the item analysis reveals that 20% of the items are of poor diagnostic quality due to weak discrimination power and ineffective distractors. In response to the instrument quality issue, this study concludes that while the test is generally reliable for assessing student achievement, teachers must revise the 8 non- functional items to ensure the assessment instrument accurately reflects students' English proficiency.
