Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of using the Noveltoon application as a teaching medium on students’ narrative reading comprehension at the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 4 Metro. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design, involving an experimental class and a control class. The sample consisted of 58 students, with 23 students in the experimental class and 35 students in the control class. The research instrument was a reading comprehension test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions, administered as a pre-test and a post-test.

The results of the pre-test showed that the mean score of the experimental class was 59.46, while the control class obtained a mean score of 49.71. After receiving the treatment using the Noveltoon application, the post-test results indicated a significant improvement in the experimental class with a mean score of 79.43, whereas the control class, which was taught using conventional media, achieved a mean score of 70.67. The data were analyzed using an Independent Sample through SPSS version 23. The result of the hypothesis testing revealed that the Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.008, which was lower than the significance level of 0.05, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected

Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the use of the Noveltoon application has a positive and significant effect on students’ narrative reading comprehension. The application enhances students’ reading motivation and comprehension by providing engaging stories supported by attractive visual illustrations. Therefore, Noveltoon is recommended as an alternative digital learning medium for teaching reading comprehension, particularly narrative texts, at the senior high school level.
