Abstract

The objective of the research is to improve the students’ reading comprehension and students’ learning activities by using Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach at eight grade of MTs Ma’arif 18 Roudhotul Ulum Pasir Sakti East Lampung. This research is a Classroom Action Research (CAR).

This research consists of two cycles. The subject of this research are 25 the students of MTs Ma’arif 18 Roudhotul Ulum Pasir Sakti East Lampung. The data are gather through qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data are ganied by observations, documentation, and field note. Then, the quantitative data are gained by tests, that the consists of pre-test and post-test.

The results of this research show that the Cognitive Academic Languange Learning Approach can improve the students’ reading comprehension and the students’ learning activities. The Cognitive Academic Language Learning Approach is successful since the criteria of success is achieve. The first criteria are 70 % of students can pass the assessment score ≥ 75 based on the minimal mastery criterion. The percentage of the students who get score ≥ 75 in the pre-test are 2 students (8 %), in post-test of cycle I are 11 students (44 %), and in post-test of cycle II are 22 students (88 %). The second criteria are 70 % of the students become more active involve in teaching learning process. The percentage of the students who active in teaching learning in cycle I are 14 students (56 %), then in cycle II are 21 students (84 %). In other words, the students’ reading comprehension and the students’ learning activities are improve.
