Abstract

Capital is a fundamental component of the agricultural sector, particularly for rural communities that rely on farming as their primary source of livelihood. In rural areas, especially in Tanggamus Regency, agricultural financing practices remain strongly shaped by local traditions and limited understanding of Islamic mu‟amalah contracts. This study seeks to examine the prevailing financing mechanisms used by farmers and to identify the factors contributing to their insufficient comprehension of mu‟amalah jurisprudence. Using a qualitative approach through observations and in-depth interviews with farmers, religious figures, and relevant stakeholders, the study finds three key factors underlying the low level of farmers' understanding: 1) The relatively low educational attainment, as many youths discontinue their studies to support household income or marry immediately after completing high school; 2) The strong
influence of local cultural norms that prioritize traditional economic practices and assume that transactions are permissible as long as they avoid usury (riba), without a deeper grasp of the legal requirements of muamalah; 3) The persistence of hereditary practices in borrowing, trading, and wage-based transactions, which are conducted on the basis of trust rather than adherence to sharia-compliant contractual principles. Usinga qualitative approach through observations and in-depth interviews with farmers, religious figures, and relevant stakeholders, the study finds three key factors underlying the low level of farmers‟ understanding. First, the relatively low educational attainment, as many youths discontinue their studies to support household income or marry immediately aftercompleting high school. Second, the strong influence of local culturalnorms that prioritize traditional economic practices and assume that transactions are permissible as long as they avoid usury (riba), without a deeper grasp of the legal requirements of mu‟amalah. Third, the persistence of hereditary practices in borrowing, trading, and wage-based transactions, which are conducted on the basis of trust rather than adherence to sharia-compliant contractual principles. These findings underscore the need to strengthen mu‟amalah literacy among younger generations to promote financing systems that align with Islamic legalprinciples. Without early and systematic intervention, these challenges are likely to persist, perpetuating limited understanding and improperapplication of mu‟amalah contracts.
