Abstract

Speaking is one of four basic skills in English. It‟s mean that the purpose of teaching English is the students must mastery the four basic skills. In order the students are able to mastery them the teacher should teach the students creatively so that the students‟ interest in teacher‟s way of teaching and interest in learning English. But, there are some problems that faced by the eighth grade of Junior High School of Muhammadiyah 1 Metro in speaking performance. In this research, it focused on the students have low motivation in speaking performance. Therefore, the writer conducted this research in order to know whether related the students to get the good score. This research was aimed at detecting the influence of using small group instruction (X) on the students‟ speaking performance (Y) among the eighth grade at Junior High School of Muhammadiyah 1 Metro.

This research isquantitative research. The population of this research was the eighth grade students. A sample of 27 students established through the clustering random sampling technique. The researcher uses test and documentation as the data collecting method. To analyze the data, the writer used the formulation chi-square and formulation t-test.

The result of this research shows that fois 27 andft in 5% (5,99) and 1% (9,21). And “tobservation” is 9bigger than “ttable” 5%(0,396) and 1%(0,505). Therefore can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Null hypothesis is rejected. It means there is a significant influence of using small group instruction on the students‟ speaking performance among the eighth grade at Junior High School of Muhammadiyah 1 Metro.
