Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to investigate speaking performance of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Metro to know that the different phoneticscould help the students‟ learning process. The researcher tried to attest that phonetics masterycan be one of the teaching media to improve the students‟ speaking performance.

This research wasconducted by using quantitative research. The subject of this research are 30 students at the eleventh graders of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Metroin the academic year of 2017/2018. The technique used to obtain the sample was purposiverandom sampling. In the data collection method researcher used test, observation and documentation. Researcher used the test to obtain data on students through an oral test. Then, researcher used analysis by using Chi-Square and t-test.

Finally, the data analysis by using Chi-Square shows that x2observedis higher than x2table. It can be written as 5.991<12,22>9.210. .x2observed was higher than x2table(5.991) in 5% and (9.210) in 1 %. Can be infered that (Ha) is acceptedand (Ho) is rejected. Meanwhile, the data analysis by using t test shows that tobserved” = 16,537was higher than “ttable” level of signficant 5% = 1.699 and “ttable” level of significant 1 % = 2.462. Therefore, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Ho isrejected. This shows that there is a positive and significant influencedifferent phonetics between english and indonesian languages on the students speaking performance at the eleventh graders of SMK Muhammadiyah 2 MetroIn The Academic Year Of 2017/2018..
