Abstract

This study aimedto determine the difficulties faced by students in idiom comprehension contained in the listening comprehension on TOEFL testconducted by the Language Development Unit at IAIN Metro.This research wasa qualitative research, involvesten students from sixth semester of the English Education Department at IAIN Metro who were interviewed to provide a description of the difficulties they face in understanding idioms in listeningcomprehension on the TOEFL testconducted by the Language Development Center. In data collection, researchers used observation, interview and documentation.

The results of the analyzeddata explainedthat the difficulty in unfamiliar idiomwas60%. There aretwo difficulties that hadthe same percentage, of no analogous idiom in L1and cultural differencesas much as 10%. The difficulty in the lack of experience dealing with idiomswas70%. Then the difficulty in the lack of broad context for a given idiomwas20%. The last difficulty wasarbitraryas much as 30%. Among the six difficulties, lack of experience dealing with idiom becomes the most difficulty faced by students. Meanwhile the least difficulty they face was in no analogous idiom in L1 and cultural differences.
