Abstract

The purpose of thisresearch is to explore the use of snowball throwingtechniquein speaking and to know whether snowball throwing technique can beused to improve the speaking performance among the seventh grade students ofMTs N1 Lampung Timur.The focused on this research is speaking performance. It is related to theproblem identification that the studentsdoes not have confidence to speak englishinfront of their friend and the students afraid of making mistake when they arespeaking. Using snowball throwing techniquecan be alternated in order to buildthe students confidence to improve the students’ speaking performanceThis researchis categorizedintoclassroom action research.The action wasdone in two cycles.Each cycle consisted of planning, action, observation andreflection. In this research the students were given pretest before treatment andpost test. The object of this research was 32studentsat theseventh grade in MTsN 1 Lampung Timur in theAcademicYear 2016/2017.In collecting data, theresearcher used test (pre-test, post test 1 and post test 2), observation anddocumentation.

The result of this research shows that there is increasing in students speaking performance. The increasing can be seenfrom the progress of theaverage score in pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II. It was from 64,34 in pre-testto 67,68 in post-test I, and 72,40in post-test II. Itmeansthat the increasingstudent score in cycle I to cycle II were4,72point.The conclusion of this researchisusingsnowball throwing techniqueto improve studentsspeaking performanceamong theseventh grade students of MTs N 1 Lampung Timuris successfulbecause criteria used in this research was achieved well.
