Abstract

The objective of this research is to show that Small Group Discussion technique can be implemented to increase reading comprehension ability among the eighth graders of SMP PGRI 2 Sekampung. The students of SMP PGRI 2 Sekampung face difficulties in learning reading. They do not have readingabilityto understand the entire text given. They cannot catch the meaning or the point of the idea of the text.This research is categorized to Classroom Action Research (CAR). It is carried out to solve the students’ problem in reading comprehension. The CAR design used in this research is Kemmis and Mc Taggart’s design. It consists of four phases; planning,acting, observing, and reflecting. This research is conducted in 2 cycles and every cycle consists of 3 meetings. The subject of this research is the students of VIIIof SMP PGRI 2 Sekampung. In collecting the data, this research used test, observation and documentation.

Based on the result and the discussion of this research, it can be said that the implementation of Small Group Discussion Technique to increase the students’ reading comprehension ability is success because the criteria of success was achived. The research will be called success if there is 70% or more of the students who passed the standard minimum criteria 65 and there is improvement in learning activity. The result of this research showe that it can be proved by the students’average score from pre test to post test. The average score in pre test was 55.27 and in post test was 60.19 to 70.19. It could be concluded that using Small Group Disscussion Group Technique in reading comprehension ability, make students’ more confidence and comprehend in narrative text. So, it could be increase the students’ reading comprehension ability at eigthh graders of SMP PGRI 2 Sekampung.
