Abstract
The purpose of this research is to show that applying Contextual Teaching and Learning Approach to improve the students’ simple past tense. Learning about grammar is greatly needed by all of students to study about writing and speaking. In spite of that, most of students find the difficulties in learning about grammar especially simple past tense mastery. The sudents often found difficulties how to different between verb that is used in simple past tense and simple present tense. Besides that, media used to study still unoptimal in teaching simple past tense.The students need a media that can help their simple past tense mastery, so they can comprehend simple past tense easily. The primary goal of this research is to know wether the use of contextual teaching and learning approach can improve the students’simple past tense mastery.
This research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The data were collected by test, observation and documentation. The researcher chose class VIIID as a subject of this research.The result of the research showed that, there is significant increasing on the students’ average in pre test and post test. It is proofed on students’ average in pre test and post test I was from 31.58 to 68.42 or improve 36.84 while in post test I and post test II was from 68.42 to 81.58 or improve 13.16. It means that the use of contextual teaching and learning approach can improve the students’ simple past tense mastery at the eighth graders of MTs N 1 East Lampung.
