Abstract
Discourse either spoken or written must be arranged by good cohesive devices. Byhaving a good mastery of cohesive devices including the grammatical and lexical cohesion, the writers can create a good and systematic text in order to makethe readers easily understand the information delivered through text. The idealdiscourse especially written discourse is constructed by the words arranged based on the appropriate context and structure. Therefore, the text must havea good quality both in meaning and in structure. In this case, the use of ellipsis plays important role in composing written discourse.The primary goal from this research is to knowthe students’ errors in using ellipsis in recount textat the sixth semester students of State Islamic College Jurai Siwo Metro.A qualitative descriptive was used as the research method. The data were collected by documentationand interview. Miles and Huberman model was used to analyze the data.The findingsresearch were the students’ error in using three types of ellipsis. They are nominal, verbal, and clausal ellipsis. The percentageof students’ error in using clausal ellipsis was 58%, nominal ellipsis was 21%, and verbal ellipsis was 21%.The form of the error were in usingthe concept of ellipsis and the error of using structure and grammar. In conclusion, there were someerrors in using ellipsis in recount text made by the sixth studentsof State Islamic College Jurai Siwo Metroin academic year 2015/2016
