Abstract

The aim of the research was to show that the use of three step interview strategy can increase the descriptive writing skills and the students‟ learning activities among the second graders of SMP N 5 Metro. The problems which had been identified were that the students had low score in writing skill and they are difficult to start writing an English paragraph.
In this research, the researcher conducted classroom action research (CAR) which is done in two cycles. Each cycle consist of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this research are 29 students in VIII 1 class of SMP N 5 Metro. In collecting data, the researcher used test (pre-test, post test 1 and post test 2), observation and documentation. The research is conducted collaboratively with an English teacher of SMP N 5 Metro.
The result of this research shows that three step interview strategy can increase the students‟ learning activities and students‟ descriptive paragraph writing skills among the second graders of SMP N 5 Metro. It proved by the result of the students‟ score. The students who got score 70or more were17students (59%) at cycle I, and 23students (79%) at cycle II. It increased 20%. Furthermore, the increasing in the students‟ learning activities proved by the result of observation sheet on students‟ activities.In cycle I, 77% and in cycle II, 92% of the students were active in writing class. It increased 15%. The researcher concluded that the use of three step interview strategy can increase the descriptive writing skills among the second graders of SMP N 5 Metro.
