Abstract

The purpose of this research isto know whetherdebate techniquecanimprove the students’ speaking abilityat the eleventhgraders of Vocational High School 1 Metro. In this research, the researcher gavepre-test to know the students’ speaking abilityand testat each cycleto know the result of the students’ability in speakingafter using debate technique. This research is classroom action research design, where the people who want using this research must be seeing processing of teaching and learning directly, then taking the conclusion of the research was done. The classroom action research was conducted in2 cycles. There are four steps in each cycle; they are planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The researcher gave one pre test, two treatments, and teston the end of each cycle. The subjects of this action research are the eleventhgraders of Vocational High School 1 Metro.Based on the research that was done, the researcher can knowthat by using debate techniqueas techniqueof teaching speakingskillcan improve the students’ speaking ability. In fact, it can be seen from their average score in pre-test 46.67, 65.62 in test of cycle 1become 71.67 in testof cycle 2. It means that the students could achieve the target; the target was 70% students gained score 70.
