Abstract

Reading is an active activity of getting the meaning from text or passage andof getting the information from the writer. Translation is the replacement of textualmaterial in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language(TL).The problems that discussed in this research are focused on the reading skilland translation ability. The problem that faced by the students are the readingmaterial that used to support reading activity is not interesting, the unfamiliar wordsthat often found by them when they read the text and the difference of structurebetween English and Indonesian.The aimed of this research are to know and to describe whether there iscorrelation between students’ reading skill and their translation ability. This researchis quantitative research design. The population of this research is the students of theeighth grade of SMP PGRI 4 Bandar Mataram, which consists of 40 students. Thewriter took 40 students as the sample and used the stratified cluster sampling as thesampling technique. To know the result of the hypothesis, the writer used productmoment correlation formula.The result of the research is robseved = 0.596. It means that there is correlationbetween reading skill and translation ability. rtable 5%=0.320 and 1%=0.413.

It meansthat robserved is higherthan rtable. So, there is positive.Based on the result of the research, the writer concluded that robserved is higherthan rtable. It means that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. So, there is positive andsignificant correlation between students’ reading skill and their translation ability attheeighth Grade of SMP PGRI 4 Bandar Mataram .
