Abstract

Based on the preliminary study, the ability of the twelve graders of PGRISenior High School 2 Marga Tiga in writing paragraph was still unsatisfactory. Thestudents were unable to express their ideas in a good paragraph. They made a numberof mistakes in their writing terms of content, language use, and mechanism. Toovercome this problem, to proposed one of the appropriate strategies in the teachingof English narrative writing using serial pictures.

The objective of this research is to know the influence of using serial pictureson writing narrative paragraph. This research was conducted among 42 students at thetwelve graders of PGRI Senior High School 2 Marga Tiga in the academic year of2013/2014. This research is quantitative research design in the form of experimentalresearch. The researcher uses test as the data collection method. To investigatewhether is positive and significant influence of using serial pictures on writingnarrative paragraph.

The average score of post-test is higher (62.12) than the average of pre-test (62.79). Itcan be concluded that teaching using serial pictures can improve students’ narrativeparagraph writing ability. The result of data analysis using t-test is t-observed = 2.248 andt-table = 5%: 2.010. It means that t-observed is higher than t-table = 2.248 > 2.010. It can beinferred that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It can be concluded that using serialpictures gives more positive effect to increase writing narrative paragraph
