Abstract

One of the language skills that should be learned by English learners is speaking. But, in fact the students find difficulties in speaking English.Most of language learners especially in speaking, they do not to express what are they say every day, they isolate themselves from the classroom interaction. To motivate the passive students to be active, Storytelling Techniquecould be implemented as one of the solution. The aim of this research is investigating thepositiveand significant effect of using Storytelling technique students’ speaking performance at the tenth grader of senior high school 1 Bandar Surabaya.

This research is quantitative research conducted at thetenth grader of senior high school 1Bandar Surabayathat involves of 34students as the samples. The technique sampling waspurposivesampling. In collecting the data, this researchused test, observationand documentation. The Data were analyzed by chi-square formula.

Finally, the result data analyzed confirmed thatthe value of chi-square was 23,674. Then, the data confirmed that “ƒo= 23,674is higher than “ƒt=5,991 in 5% and 9,210 in 1%. Therefore, it can be concluded that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that there are any positive and significant effect of using storytelling technique toward students’ speaking performance at the tenth grader of Senior High School 1 Bandar Surabaya Central Lampung.And storytelling technique can be implemented as the one of alternative technique to increase the students’ speaking performance score.
