Abstract

In Indonesia, English becomes a foreign language or called EFL. To teach EFLstudents, it is needed a big effort because most EFL students think that English is adifficult lesson. It is different from ESL student who is basicallyEnglish becomes adaily speech. Hence the teacher should need an appropriate technique, strategy,approach and method to teach EFL students (English foreign language).Thepurpose of this research is to know the process and the capability of studentsSMA N 5 Metro in learning speaking by using code mixing in communicativelanguage teaching (CLT) .

The writer assumes that teaching by using code mixing incommunicative language teaching approach (CLT) is one of the exact approach inlearning speaking .Hopefully this approach is able to give the solution to solve theproblem in learning English particularly in speaking at SMA N 5 metro.

This research is quantitative research conducted at the second semester of SMA N5 Metro that involves of 33 students as the samples. The technique sampling wascluster-sampling technique. In collecting the data, the writer used test,documentation and observation. To analyze the data, the writer used chi squaretest and t-test tocount thedata of the students’ speaking performance throughoral questions in pre test which consisted of5 questionsand 9 questions in posttest.The writer concluded that there was any significantinfluence in students’ speakingit can be seen fromthe hypothesis testing of t test.Based on the result ofcalculation t- test was obtained t count =2, 51and t table = 1, 67. This showed that tcount> t table (t count higher than t table). Thus it means that the target from the researchis achieved
