Abstract

Writing is one of four skills that must be mastered byEnglish learners. Writing is an important aspect for the studentsto learn since early stage. It is one of the productive skill that isoften used to convey the idea (to communicate with others)besides speaking.

The researcher uses mind mapping techniquein this research. Mind mapping technique is a technique bymaking a concept thought a word or clue then each word has abranch like a tree. The using of Mind mapping can help the students infinding the ideas and it can increase the students writing descriptive paragraphskill.This research is Classroom Action Research that consists two cycles. Theresearch was conducted at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Way Jepara on class VIIIwhich consisted of 26 students. The data collecting method used test,documentation, observation and field note.

The invention of this research shows that there was increased from cycle 1to cycle 2. The result from the data in cycle 1, it was gained the average score ofpre-test was 62,11 and post-test 64,88 and post-test from cycle 2 was gained theaverage score 66,19. The result of cycle 2 is higher than the result of post-test atcycle 1. The condition of the class was getting better. The students pay attentionto the teacher’s explanation in learning activity. The students are more active inlearning process. They can express their idea in writing descriptive paragraph. Itmeans that the use of mind mapping technique can increase the students’ writingdescriptive paragraph at the eighth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Way Jepara.
