Abstract

Language is a set of rules, which is used as tool ofhuman communication. In Indonesia English is a foreignlanguage that needed to face the globalization era. Moreover,in learning English the student must be mastered in severalskills, such as listening, speaking, reading and writing.Remember the punctuation is very important in the process ofwriting to unclear the meaning, intonation and to avoid anerror. So, the writer wants to take one of those skills. Thewriter wants to analysis of the students’ punctuation error onthe narrative text of the tenth graders of SMA MuhammadiyahPekalongan in the Academic Year of 2011/2012.

The purposes of this research is to describe thepunctuation error on the narrative text that conducted by thestudent tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah Pekalongan.This research uses interview, observation and documentationas data collection method. The interview is done toward thestudents, teacher and headmaster of SMA MuhammadiyahPekalongan. The observation is done only toward the studentsof tenth graders of SMA Muhammadiyah Pekalongan. And thedocumentation is done to get the data about school, students,teachers and all something which is needed to do thisresearch that have related with SMA MuhammadiyahPekalongan. All of the data is analysis by deductive way.

From the result of the research, appears so many errordone by the students and only a little students that bemastered in use punctuation in their writing. So many factorsthat cause the student do the error, like lack of knowledge of the students about the punctuation, and they are doesn’tknow the rules in using punctuation mark in writing text.
