Abstract

The main objective of this research is to know the reading comprehension ability of the students` XI MIA 1 and to find out the performance of reciprocal teaching strategies in improving students' reading comprehension in teaching and learning. In this study, the author wants to focus on student comprehension. The relevant of problem identification is the students is not understanding about the contents in the text, lack of vocabulary in English, and students are not interested in learning English.

In this study, the authors used Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. The subjects of this study were 35 students of class XI MIA 1 SMA N 1 Batanghari. In collecting data, the authors use tests (pre-test, post-test 1, and post-test 2), observation and documentation. This research was collaborated with an English teacher at SMA N 1 Batanghari.

The results of this study indicate that student scores have improved significantly from pre-test to post-test. The average value of students at the time of the pre-test was 62.43, post-test I with an average of 68 and at post-test II was 75.71. So it can be concluded that Reciprocal Teaching Strategy can be used to help improve students' learning abilities in reading comprehension.
