Abstract
This final project discusses the syntactic shift used in the English Indonesian translation by the fifth semester students of the English Department of IAIN Metro. The purpose of this study was to analyze the types of syntactic shift that are commonly used and rarely used by fifth semester students, and to find out what are the difficulties of fifth semester students in making syntactic shifts in English-Indonesian translation.
The method of this research was qualitative research. The research subject were the fifth semester students of the English Department of IAIN Metro. In colecting data, the researcher used observation, interview and documentation.
The result of research showed that there are students translation test entitled the Tale of the Three Brothers. From the five sub-categories of syntactic shifts, there are three sub-categories of them which were used by the fifth semester students. Translation by using word into phrase shifts reached a total of 60%. About 24% are translation by using phrase into clause shifts. The other 16% are translation by using clause into sentence shifts. Both phrase into sentence and sentence into paragraph shifts are not found in the students assigments of English Indonesian translation.
