Abstract

The objectives of this research are to investigate the most dominant types of stance modality in the undergraduate thesis of English department students and to analyze the students’ problem in utilizing of modality in undegraduate thesis of English Department students at IAIN Metro. This research is expected to be beneficial in informing the modality because the concept of modality is very important in studying the writing skill.

This research was a qualitative research. The type of research was a case study. Meanwhile, the qualitative design used in this study was a descriptive study. The data were taken from the primary sources that were the fifteenth undegraduate thesis of English Department students of IAIN Metro in the Academic Year of 2017/2018, particularly in the part of Chapter III.

The result of this research proves that the most dominant types on the use of modality in the undegraduate thesis of English department students IAIN Metro is deontic modality. including 146 uses, while the uses of dynamic modality including 137 uses and epistemic modality including 12 uses. There are 26 inappropriate uses of modality because the inappropriate verb form.
