Abstract

The term bilingual can be interpreted as a person who can speak two languages. Nowadays, being a bilingual in the midst of widespread information circulating is a phenomenon that cannot be denied. This study attempts to examine the ability of a Javanese-Indonesian bilingual student majoring in English Education on the ability to speak English. This study used a descriptive qualitative method in which the researcher conducted in-depth interviews with 10 Javanese-Indonesian bilingual students.

The purpose of this study is to try to explained the dominance of the lack of bilingual English speaking ability in Java-Indonesia, determine the type of bilingual owned by the respondent, and analyze the impact of the bilingual type possessed on the ability to speak English.

The results of this research are; there is a strong influence from the environment that causes daily Javanese and Indonesian languages to continue to be used by Javanese-Indonesian bilinguals so that it interferes with their English skills, at least practicing English, and language anxiety due to errors in grammar and pronunciation. The type of bilingual that the respondent has is based on; language growth and development; language proficiency. from the bilingual type owned by the respondents, has an impact on their English speaking ability, this is due to the dominance of use of the Javanese-Indonesianlanguage.
