Abstract

The objectives of this research are to analyze the most frequent type of grammatical concordance in students’ descriptive writing and to investigate the cause of the most frequent type of grammatical concordance in students’ descriptive writing. The researcher analyzed those phenomena based on the consideration of the students’ problem in writing investigated in the process of pre-survey. Therefore, it is hoped that this research is beneficial in illustrating the phenomena of grammatical concordance in writing.

The method of this research is qualitative research in the form of a case study carried out at SMK Muhammadiyah 1 Metro. The primary sources of this research are the result of students’ document given by English teacher and interview with the tenth graders that consist of 15 students. The researcher used documentation, observation and interview in collecting the data. The observation was conducted to analyze the most frequent type of grammatical concordance in students’ descriptive writing. The interview was conducted to investigate the cause of the most frequent type of grammatical concordance in students’ descriptive writing of the research objectives.

The research results show the most frequent type of grammatical concordance in students’ descriptive writing. The type is subject-verb concord. It is because the highest percentage (67%) belongs to that type. In addition, the second research result is about the causes of the most frequent type of grammatical concordance in students’ descriptive writing that consist of interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer and context of learning.
