Abstract

The objective of this research was to show that using scrabble games can increase the vocabulary mastery of, the Grade VIII Students of SMPN 3 Batanghari in the Academic Year of 2020/2021. The writer had outlined the problem in this research that focused on increasing students’ vocabulary. It was related on the problem identification that the students have low motivation to learn English, they have difficulties to remembering vocabulary well and they were also not interested in the learning method in the class. They always feel bored with English subjects.

This study was categorized into classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consist of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The object of this research was the increase in students’vocabulary. In collecting the data used test, observation and documentation.

The result of this research shows that the mean of the students score is 56.25 in which there are 5 from 20 students who passed the standart minimum score. In the post-test I, there are 10 students who increase and the score mean is 70.5. Meanwhile, in the post-test II, the mean score is 80. There are 18 students passed the standart minimum score. It is indicated that scrabble games can increase the students’ vocabulary. This result is strength by observation and the field note result that students are more active in the class and enjoy the learning process.
