Abstract

This study aims to determine the students' writing in using cohesion devices and to find the types of cohesion devices that are often used in student writing of the fifth semester among English department students at IAIN Metro. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. With data collection tools using observation and documentation.

The results showed that there were documents from the results of the fifth semester students. The construction of cohesive tools that is often used is conjunction 119 (66%), reference 54 (30%), and other uses of cohesive tools are substitution. The number of substitutions used is 8 (4%). It is clear that the most frequently used type of cohesive device in students' writing is conjunctions.
