Abstract

The purpose of this research to find out types of anxieties do the students have in speaking and what factors make students’ feel anxious when speaking English of the English Education Departmen At IAIN Metro.

This research was a qualitative research. The methods used in collecting data were observation, interview and documentation. The data analysis technique was data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing and verification. The subjects of this study were Students English Education Department.

From observation data and in-depth interviews with respondents, researchers found that students majoring in English Education Department experienced anxiety when speaking English. The researcher found that there were three types of anxiety experienced by students, namely: trait anxiety, state anxiety, and situation-specific anxiety. The researcher also found the factors that contributed to the anxiety of sixth-semester students in the English Education Department at IAIN Metro when speaking English were communication apprehension, anxiety test, and fear of negative evaluations.
