Abstract

The main aims of this research were improved students’ reading
comprehension and also their learning activity at MAN 1 Lampung Timur by using Five Whys Technique. The researcher tries to investigate whether Five Whys Technique can used as a technique to improve the students’ reading comprehension and their learning activity.
In this research, the researcher conducted a classroom action research (CAR) which was done in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this research was 29 students in the tenth grade of MAN 1 Lampung Timur. In collecting data, the researcher used that included test pre-test, post-test I, and post-test II, observation, and documentation. The research was conducted collaboratively with the English teacher of MAN 1 Lampung Timur.
The result of this research show that Five Whys Technique have positive result in improving students’ reading comprehension at the Tenth grade of MAN 1 Lampung Timur. It can be proven by students’ average score from pre-test to post-test. The average score in pre-test was 61,37, post-test I was 67,41, and 77,41 in post-test II. In addition, the students’ learning activities were improved from 56% to 78,5% in cycle II. It means that the using Five Whys Technique can improve the students’ reading comprehension.
