Abstract

The objectives of this are to analyze the types of speech error produced by students and to analyze what are the factor that cause of speech error by students of the fourth semester of IAIN Metro. This research was conducted on the phenomenon of speech error in speaking English.

The method of this research qualitative research in the form of case study in the type of descriptive qualitative. The primary resources of this research are the 10 students of the fourth English education department IAIN Metro. The data were collected by observation, documentation, recording, and interview.

From the observation of the data from interviews with respondent, researchers found that students majoring in English education experienced speech errors in speaking English. the researcher found that many students had speech errors in speaking English. From nine types of speech error researcher just found 7 types error on student speaking performance. The errors consist of Silent Pause 41 times, Filled Pause 15 times, Repeats 3 times, Corrections 3 times, stutters 2 times and Slips of Tongue 29 times.
