Abstract

The purpose of this study is to know that Guided Conversation Technique can improve the students’ speaking skill among the eight grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro. The researcher applied Guided Conversation Technique as the teaching strategy to improve students’ speaking skill.

The study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was done in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subjects of this study were 23 students of the eight grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro. In collecting data, the researcher used test, observation and documentation. The research was conducted collaboratively with the English teacher of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro.

The result of this study shows that Guided Conversation Technique had positive result in improving students’ speaking skill the eight grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro. It was investigated that the students average score from pre-test to post test was improved. The average score in pre-test was 38, post-test I was 58 and become 70 in post-test II. The percentage of students speaking skill in post tes II (75%) had achieved the indicator of success. It means that the use of Guided Conversation Technique can improve students’ speaking skill especially in material offering help at the eighth graders SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Metro.
