Abstract

This study aims to explore whether the use of English pop songs has a positive and significant influence on the listening skills of students in class VIII of SMP N 2 Pekalongan. In the learning process, the use of such pop songs is expected to increase students' level of fun and excitement, which in turn will make them more relaxed and comfortable while learning. In addition, the use of songs is also expected to help students expand their vocabulary as well as provide additional motivation in learning. Teachers are expected to apply this strategy well so that students can more easily understand the listening materials presented using English pop songs, creating a comfortable and effective learning environment for the students.

This research is quantitative research and uses a quasi-experimental design. The population of this study was class VIII semester 2 SMP N 2 PEKALONGAN as many as 253 students. The sample of this study amounted to 2 classes, namely VIII A as an experimental class with a total of 29 students and VIII C as a control class with a total of 24. In the experiment class, researchers used English pop songs, while in the control class not used English pop songs. Each class got the same pre-test and different post-test with the same level. Treatment was conducted in 2 meetings. Before the treatment, students took a pre test. After treatment, students took a post-test. After giving the post-test, the researcher analyzed the data using SPSS version 26.0 to calculate the independent sample t-test.

From the analysis calculated using SPSS version 26.0 obtained Sig = 0.000 and α 0.05. Meaning that Ha is accepted because Sig < 0.05. The results of this study show that the use of English pop songs has a positive and significant impact on students' listening skills. The students showed a high level of enjoyment in learning, were more relaxed, and had higher motivation to learn when the material was presented through the pop songs. Thus, this study makes an important contribution in providing recommendations to teachers to integrate the use of English pop songs in the learning process, thus creating a more enjoyable and effective learning environment for students.
