Abstract

English as a language for communication was important in this globalization era where people from many countries used English as a language to communicate with one another in daily activities. One of the ability that must be mastered to be able communicate well in English is speaking.

Speaking ability is very difficult. The speaking difficulties could be caused by some factors such as they have lack of vocabulary, they have lack of motivation to speak English, they have lack of self-confidence to speak English, and they think that English is hard to be learned. Meanwhile, the use of appropriate technique was very important in teaching learning process. So, it is need a suitable technique to teach or learn speaking ability. Technique that can be used is make a match technique. Make a match technique is one of cooperative learning techniques.

This research is Classroom Action Research that conducted by 2 cycles. There are four steps in each cycle: they are planning, action, observation, and reflection. The aim of this research was improve the students speaking ability at the eighth graders of SMP N 3 Gunung Agung in academic year 2015/2016. This research was conducted toward 36 students. The researcher used observation, test (pre-test and post-test), documentation, and field note to collecting data. While, to analyzing the data, the researcher used students average score. The average result score of the pre-test and post-test shows that there is progressing score. The average score at pre-test is 62,92 post-test I is 66,5 and then, the average score at post-test II is 75,5.

Based on the result above, it can be concluded that make a match technique can improve the students' speaking ability at the eighth graders of SMP N 3 Gunung Agung.
