Abstract

The objectives of the study were to find out the students' self-esteem and speaking ability at SMA N 1 Bandar Sribhawono, and to find out whether or there is no a significant correlation between the students self-esteem and speaking ability.

As basic problem the writer wants to discuss in this final research; how the level of self-esteem and their speking ability at SMA N 1 Bandar Sribhawono, and is there a significant correlation between the self-esteem and speaking ability.

This research will give some useful information about self-esteem and speaking ability. This research will also present the description and correlation between students' self-esteem and their speaking ability at SMA N 1 Bandar Sribhawono.

The population of the study is the second grade students of social at SMA N 1 Bandar Sribhawono in academic year 2015/2016; consist of 36 students. This research is quantitative research design. The technique of collecting data that the writer uses; documentation, observation and test. After collected the data, so the dates were statistically computed to find out the correlation between the two variables. They are independent variable (X) and dependent variable (Y), the independent variable was students' self-esteem and dependent variable was speaking ability.

To investigate whether there is positive and significant correlation between the students'self-esteem and their speaking ability, so the writer analyzes the data by using product moment correlation. The results of data analysis; "r observed is 0.841 and "r table" is 5% (0.339) or 1% (0.436). Furthermore, the data confirmed that "r observed" is higher than "r table". Therefore, it can be inferred that Hi is accepted and Ho is rejected. It means that there is a positive and significant correlation between students' self-esteem and students' speaking ability at SMA N1 Bandar Sribhawono.

Finally, based on analysis above, can be inferred that the level of correlation between students' self-esteem and their speaking ability is 70.72%, by counting the quadrate of "r observed" and multiplying it by 100% %, (r observed )2X 100%(0.8941) x 100% = 70.72%.
