Abstract

The purpose of teaching and learning English is to improve the four skills namely: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In fact, many students still found difficulties in understanding the text. Meanwhile, to improve the students' enthusiast in learning is motivation. Motivation can be stimulated by using reward. Reward is an educational tools which improves up good behavior for students educational effort to achieve learning goal, so reward can be used to encourage student to be enthusiast in learning, especially in reading perfonnance.

This research was a quantitative research, especially in the quasi experimental design form. The objective of this research was intended to find out the influence of giving reward on the students' reading performance in descriptive texts. This research was conducted in Junior High School 2 Batanghari, whose population was the VII grade. A class was taken as sample of the research, that was class VII' that consist 34 students.To investigate whether there was a positive and significant influence by giving reward and reading performance at the VII', the researcher analyzed the data by using "t-test".In this research, the researcher used pre-test on control class and post-test on the experimental class. The pre-test average score of control class was 60.294 and Meanwhile, the post-lest average score of experimental class was 71.764.The result of data analysis was tobscrvcd = 5,034 and tie = 2,031, 2.727, and 3,598.

Based on the data result confirmed that tobseve is higher than taste. Therefore, it can be inferred that Ha was accepted. It means that there was a positive and significant influence of giving reward toward the students' reading performance at the seventh grade of Junior High School 2 Batanghari in the academic of year 2012/2013
